Book section in Parallax 2015-2017, edited by Pawel Mendrek and Martin Newth. A first-person fictional recounting a bookseller's attempts to communicate with their co-workers before blacking out in the aftermath of an accident at work. The text was written in response to a text by Malgorzata Szandala in the same volume, in which the idea of city gardens (loosely considered in relation to international art education and collaboration) was explored through geometry and optics. My text takes a metaphorical approach in response - the protagonist has been digging through storage boxes on a subterranean mezzanine, before falling and causing an injury which substantially affects their perception and their ability to form meaningful interactions with their co-workers. Two related artworks, The Authority of Collective Decisions Will Have Been Undermined by Affiliations Adopted on the Hoof, or...(2015), and We May Have Hidden Behind our Speech at This Appalling Moment, or Something (2016) are reproduced on pages 144-151 and 222-225. Parallax 2015-2017, edited by Pawel Mendrek and Martin Newth, and designed by Kasia Wolny, documented the exchanges between ASP Katowice in Poland and Chelsea College of Arts. Through this project the two art schools set out to explore, challenge and exchange ideas and information from each institution's social, cultural and historical point of view. The publication asked questions about what an art school is and what it might become, acknowledging that an art school’s function is a test site; one that allows for discourse to be enacted through making work, where ideas and approaches, methods and technologies are shared, challenged and developed.
